Polyethylene furanoate (PEF) is a thermoplastic polyester. It is biodegradable and semi-aromatic. Due to its superior qualities, it has a great alternative to PET.
It eliminates the carbon footprint, due to its efficiency. It can be easily thermoformed and moulded because it is heat resistant and has high tensile strength.
PEF is produced by the polymerisation of 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid (FDA) and mono-ethylene glycol. When the feedstocks are introduced to the system, they produce a feed slurry. It is then moved to the reactor where the esterification process takes place and antimony gluconate acts as a catalyst. Further, the heat is used to remove the excess water and hence produces polyethylene furanoate (PEF).
The leading importers in the market of polyethylene furanoate are the United States, Japan, Italy, and France. Whereas the top exporters are China, South Korea, India, and the Netherlands.

Industrial Uses Impacting Polyethylene Furanoate Price Trend:
Polyethylene Furanoate is employed in many applications, because of its good thermal and barrier qualities. It is extensively used in Alcoholic beverages, fruit juices, milk, soft drinks, fresh tea, and water.
It is employed in the production of clothing apparel, carpets, diapers, fabrics, industrial fibers, and filters. Other than that, it is also utilised in the manufacturing of cement, fertilisers, insecticides nutraceuticals, and pharmaceuticals.
It is the best alternative to PET for packaging uses which include bottles, films, and food trays because it is a substantial gas barrier for water vapour, carbon dioxide, and oxygen.
Key Market Players:
- Avantium Technologies B.V.
- Danone S.A.
- Toyobo Co., Ltd.
- Alpla
News and Events:
- September 01, 2022: The Nova institute carried out a peer-reviewed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Avantium’s PEF (polyethylene furanoate) applications, within the framework of the European PEFerence project. It was shown in the study that using 100% renewable carbon in PEF rather than fossil carbon in PET would result in huge reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. The main component of PEF is FDCA (2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid). The first commercial FDCA facility will open in 2024 globally.
